There can be many reasons why someone buys a house in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. And not ALL these reasons will lead to a preference for the Domaine du Bac. But a lot will, and we’ll be happy to list them for you:
1. All possible rest and space at 6 hours drive from the hustle and bustle and the noise.
Crowds and noise cause stress; space and silence prevent stress. Compared to the UK (where it’s busy and also much noisier than you often realize), Ray-sur-Saône is an OASIS. There is rarely any noise, or it must be the occasional agricultural tractor on the 2 days of haymaking; there is always space and therefore never a single traffic jam. From the terrace you can hear birds and sometimes a church bell in the distance, but no honking. And there are hundreds of meters between the Domaine and the neighbours…
2. Clean air and no exhaust fumes or industrial smoke
The nearest sources of air pollution are hundreds of kilometres away from Ray-sur-Saône; large concentrations of industry even more. The many forests and natural areas of the Haute Saône (the department with the highest number of forests in France!) guarantee an air quality that is unparalleled.
3. Little wind and less rain
The climate in Burgundy-Franche-Comté is a moderate continental climate: in winter it is sometimes a little COLDER than in the UK, but in summer, on average, it’s five degrees warmer and almost WITHOUT wind and with considerably less rain. That makes that the “typical English summer day” of wind, drizzle and barely 16 degrees will, in Ray-sur-Saône, be a wind still, dry day with 21 degrees. That’s a LOT more pleasant! In terms of wind, Ray is protected by its location between the Vosges (north) and the Jura (southeast), so that the southwestern air currents stop here. Moreover, the warmer season here lasts much longer: usually from the end of April to the end of September or even mid-October.
4. Affordable real estate prices
The average purchase price in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté currently varies between 1,200 and 2,400 Euros per m2; in the Haute Saône it is even between 1.000 and 1.500 Euros per m2. In the UK the price varies from 2.300 to 11.500 Euro ( 2.200 to 11.300 £) per m2 or a factor 3 to 9 higher!
5. Acceptable distance to the United Kingdom
Those who continue to live in the UK but still regularly want to enjoy the peace and quiet of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, should be able to drive back and forth within a reasonable time. The driving distance to Ray is (according to Google Maps) just over 5 hours (from the Calais Ferry Terminal). Six hours less than the Côte d’Azur and five hours less than the Languedoc…
6. Supervision possible when used as a second home
If you want to use one of the houses in Ray as a weekend or holiday home, you will probably benefit from the fact that the residents of the OTHER house on the Domaine du Bac may be able to supervise the house during periods of absence.
